Thomas Kufus ranges among the most influential, independent producers of documentary films in Germany. His commitment to author driven, political and emotional documentaries as well as art house fiction and innovative formats for TV has remained steadfast and is the motivating force behind the company. With 24h BERLIN the team broke new grounds, provoking broadcasters to cast aside the traditional slot structure for the duration of 24h allowing for a so far unprecedented 24 hours documentary. In 2010, 24h BERLIN won the Bavarian TV Award as well as the German TV award. In 2014 the follow-up 24h JERUSALEM was broadcast by European TV stations and received the German TV Award as well. With TIME OF HEROES Heise and Kufus produced the first fictional real time series for German TV and won the German TV award 2013 as well as the Grimme award 2014.
Over the past 25 years Kufus produced more than 100 documentaries, documentary television series and feature films. Many of them won national and international awards, among these MORE THAN HONEY (D: Markus Imhoof), THE FLAT (D: Arnon Goldfinger), GERHARD RICHTER PAINTING (D: Corinna Belz), IF NOT US, WHO (D: Andres Veiel) or BLACK BOX GERMANY (D: Andres Veiel).
For ARTE Kufus produced one of the first docu-soaps in Germany, many did follow. Together with business partner Volker Heise he developed and realised the award-winning living history formats BLACK FOREST HOUSE and THE MANOR HOUSE 1902.
Kufus’ collaboration with Aleksandr Sokurov on films like MOLOCH or FATHER AND SON was highly acclaimed and awarded in Cannes.
Thomas Kufus is a member of The European and The German Film Academy. From 2009 until 2015 he had been chairman of the German Film Academy.
